What is a DXA scan?
A DXA (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry) scan is a quick, painless procedure that measures:
- Bone density – how strong your bones are
- Body composition – fat, muscle and bone distribution
It uses very low-dose x-rays, much less than a standard x-ray.
What will your scan show?
- Total body fat percentage and fat mass
- Visceral fat (fat stored around internal organs)
- Fat distribution across arms, legs and trunk
- Muscle mass and muscle distribution
- Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) – how many calories your body burns at rest
- General indication of bone density
Why might you be referred?
Your clinician may request a DXA scan to:
- Assess your risk of bone fractures
- Check for early signs of osteoporosis
- Guide treatment to strengthen your bones
- Support your health, fitness or weight management journey
Preparing for your scan
✓ Complete the questionnaire provided
✓ Wear loose, comfortable clothing and footwear
✗ Avoid metal fastenings, jewellery or underwired bras

During the scan
- You will lie flat on a padded table with a pillow
- The scanner arm moves over your body (no tunnel, no enclosed space)
- Usually focused on spine, hips and body composition
- Scan time: a few minutes per area
- Total appointment time: around 30 minutes
A DXA technician will remain with you throughout.
After the scan
- You can resume normal activities straight away
- Results are sent to your referrer within 2 weeks
- Your clinician will discuss the results with you
Safety
DXA scans are very safe. The radiation dose is very low (similar to a few hours of natural background radiation). They are not recommended during pregnancy.
